It can be done in various ways. But if your gadget does not have a slot for a SIM card, and there is a need to use the Internet in places where there is no wireless network, then the only option is to connect a 3G modem. Made in the form of a flash drive, it will help you catch the network wherever there is cellular network coverage. Below we tell you how to connect a modem to your tablet and avoid possible problems.

When purchasing a modem, it is important to decide on a cellular operator so that it has coverage in the place where the device will be used. Today the main choice is Megafon, MTS, Beeline, Tele2 and Yota. Which option to choose is a personal matter for everyone. But it is worth noting that for traveling throughout the country, Megafon and MTS are better suited, since they have the largest coverage and usually catch even in the outback. Tele2 is a fairly budget option, but there are a lot of places where the connection will not be received, or the signal will be too weak. Beeline is an option for everyone; there are good tariffs, but far from the most profitable. Yota will appeal to those who like to fully manage their services. The operator is relatively young, so not all users trust it.

A device from one manufacturer does not work with SIM cards from another service provider. It is possible to change the firmware of the accessory so that it works with any SIM, but this is quite problematic and unsafe from the point of view of the further operation of the modem.

Advice! The modem is usually sold with a SIM card and an connected tariff, so when purchasing, you should clarify which tariff is connected, and if necessary, switch to a more optimal one.

Regarding the device, the options may be as follows: model with Wi-Fi, 3G or 4G distribution. The first type is the most convenient, since it does not require a physical connection to the device, and the entire setup consists only of turning on Wi-Fi. 3G modems are rare today, but they can come from friends or just lie idle on a shelf. The downside is that the connection speed will not be the highest, but if the buyer is only interested in surfing or working with mail, then this option is quite suitable. 4G modems provide high connection speeds, which are enough for a variety of tasks - from just communicating on the Internet to online games.

Connecting a modem

Connecting your device to the Internet using a USB modem is not difficult. If the device is new, then there will be no problems at all, since they provide support for such devices, and usually there are no problems with installing drivers. If the tablet is old, then nuances may arise, for example, Prestigio and Lenovo models with a release date more than 5 years ago did not have OTG support, that is, they did not know how to work with USB devices even through the appropriate adapter.

You can connect a 3G modem to an Android tablet directly via a USB connector, if provided in the device, or via an OTG cable. When choosing the latter, you should first find out which output is provided in the tablet. Thus, older Samsung models did not have the microUSB output that is familiar today, but their own format with a wide plug. In modern models, new Type-C format.

OTG cable

When the adapter is purchased, you need to connect the usb modem to the Android tablet via this cable. The system must detect the device. In some cases, you will be automatically prompted to install drivers for the device; you must agree with this. After installing them, the Internet will automatically start working.

Advice! If the driver is not installed automatically, you can download it from the official website of the cellular operator or download it from the Play Market. The instructions for the modem will indicate exactly what needs to be downloaded.

If the device is detected by the accessory, but driver installation has not started, and the Internet does not work, you should configure it manually.

Possible problems

Sometimes it happens that connecting a modem to a tablet ends up with the device perceives it as a flash drive or does not see the modem at all. The problem may be that the modem was originally designed for PCs or laptops, and tablet compatibility is a secondary feature. In this case, the user needs to configure it in such a way that it is perceived by the mobile device only as a tablet, and not as a storage medium.

  1. You need to connect the device to your computer and install all the proprietary software from the included disk or directly from the accessory’s memory (different manufacturers offer their own options).
  2. After installing the software, you should log into it and look at the settings menu. Among other things, there will be a “modem only” option. It should be activated.
  3. In addition, it is immediately recommended disable pin code verification so that this does not create additional inconvenience.

After completing these steps, connecting the USB modem to the tablet will not cause any other problems.

Another point that may be found among different tablet manufacturers is that it is necessary enable USB modem support. To do this, the user must enter the tablet settings and find the “mobile data” item or click on the “more” button. In the submenu that opens there will be an item “USB modem”, you should tick it and save the data.

An important point to know about Yota modems is that it will not work until the user creates a tariff for himself. To start using the Internet from this company, you need not only to connect it to your tablet and set up a mobile connection. The owner needs to download the branded application from the Play Market. The SIM card will be registered there, a certain numeric code will be assigned to it (there is no subscriber number in the traditional sense), and after that the buyer himself configures the tariff parameters. After completing these steps, the Internet will start working.

Some tablets do not have a built-in 3G module, so they can only access the Internet via Wi-Fi. The user can expand the functionality of the tablet by following fairly simple instructions. In this article you will learn how to properly connect a 3G modem to an Android tablet.

To connect a 3G modem to your Android tablet, you will need the following equipment:

  1. 3G modem with SIM card purchased from a cellular operator.
  2. Tablet with USB port.
  3. OTG cable (host). It comes bundled with the tablet.

In some cases, connection is made difficult by the fact that the tablet does not have a full USB connector. Instead, the manufacturer installs a Micro USB port. To connect a 3G modem in this case, you will have to use a special adapter - a host OTG cable. If nothing happens when you connect equipment via an OTG cable, that is, the tablet does not notify that a new device has been detected, then most likely the tablet simply does not support USB host mode. The only way out is to replace the tablet with a more modern model that does not have difficulties connecting external devices.

If, when connected, the screen starts to blink, goes in stripes, and the device reboots or turns off, then the reason for this is the voltage level or current strength insufficient to power the modem. You can try connecting the equipment to the tablet with the charger connected.

When connecting using an OTG cable, try replacing it with a better accessory or use a USB hub with external power to connect.

If you simply connect USB 3G to the tablet, it will be detected as a flash drive. To avoid this, you must first configure the modem by setting a special operating mode for it. Use the 3G Modem Mode Switcher program to perform this operation.

If 3G Modem Mode Switcher does not work, use another method to enable the “Modem Only” mode, which involves using the capabilities of the HyperTerminal program:

After setting the network port, edit the configuration file. Expand the "File" menu, select "Properties" and go to the "Settings" tab. Click on the "ASCII Setup" button. Activate the “Echo typed characters locally” checkbox.
A terminal will open in which you need to type the command “ate1”. A message should appear stating that everything went OK. After this, you can enter the following command - “AT^U2DIAG=0”.

In this mode, the modem will not be able to fully work on the computer, so it can only be used to connect to a tablet. If you want to return the equipment to its original functionality, repeat the steps described above, executing the command “AT^U2DIAG=255” at the end.

Another option: use the DC-Unlocker program to disable the CD-Rom and CardReader functions. The procedure is approximately the same:

  1. Connect the modem to your computer. Launch DC-Unlocker and click "Detect modem". If the device is detected, its technical characteristics will appear in the program window.
  2. Run the command AT^SETPORT=»A1;1,2″ to disable CD-Rom and CardReader.

If you later decide to return these functions to the device, then launch DC-Unlocker again and run the request AT^SETPORT=»A1;10,12,13,16,A1,A2″. If your modem has its own settings management software on your computer, use it to disable PIN code verification. This is usually sufficient, but depending on the model and manufacturer, the setup procedure may vary slightly. Therefore, when connecting a modem to a tablet, you need to pay attention to the features of the equipment, which are usually indicated on the mobile operator’s website.

Android setup

Having configured and connected the modem to the tablet, you can begin setting network parameters on Android.

Having found the data for the APN point, proceed to create it, otherwise the device will not be able to use the mobile Internet.

The main requirement that the owner makes of his tablet computer is, of course, unlimited . Of course, you can always use Wi-Fi, but, unfortunately, it is not available everywhere yet. The second way to always be connected to the Internet is to use a 3G modem. You can also connect a usb modem to the tablet for ease of use. Next we will talk about the features of connecting the modem and the process of connecting it. Let's consider how to connect a 3g modem to a tablet.

One of the most important features of tablets is their design. Many Chinese tablet PCs that contain the Android operating system should support a standard connection via a simple USB connector. But, as practice shows, this function does not always work, which confuses many, especially novice PC users. The reasons for this phenomenon may be incorrect settings or the lack of necessary drivers. One way or another, when connecting a modem to a tablet, the user may not see absolutely any effect. In this case, you should switch the modem to “modem only” mode, and the problem will disappear by itself. In addition, it is possible.
It is important to disable the PIN code verification that the modem does. If this is not done, the settings that will be entered will not be saved on the tablet.
Connecting a 3g modem to your tablet is easy!
As soon as the modem is inserted into the tablet for the first time, the Software and Driver Installation Wizard will automatically launch. There is no need to describe anything here, because... If you strictly follow the wizard's instructions, you can easily install the necessary driver and check the operation of the modem itself. But it is important to save a copy of the files that are on the virtual modem, just in case.
The next step is to disable the PIN code verification function by clicking on the corresponding button. Next, you should switch the modem to “Modem only” mode. In this case, you definitely need to turn off the Internet and install, or launch, if you already have it, Hiper Terminal. After finishing the program, you need to disconnect the modem from the connector, not forgetting to use the “Safely Remove” function.

Setting up a 3G modem

In order to configure the modem, follow all the steps in a clear sequence:
1. Find “Settings” in the menu, and then select “Wireless & Networks”. Having found item 3G there, you should not forget to check the required box;
2. Next, go to the “Mobile Network” tab and check that the “Data Transfer” button is turned on. If not, turn it on;
3. Next you need connect the modem itself to the tablet and wait about half a minute, at which time 3G is determined by the system. In the process of determining it, the red cross should disappear from the icon indicating the connection;
4. Click on “Access Points” and add a new one using the “New Access Point” button. After entering all the necessary data, be sure to go to the menu and save the changes;
5. After the operation performed in step 4, the new access point will appear in the tab with all access points, and if everything is done correctly, then after a certain period of time it will become active and the 3G icon will start to glow;
6. If the access point does not become active, you need to restart the tablet, while removing the modem. And, after restarting, reinsert the modem and check the 3G icon.
However, many problems associated with connecting a modem to a tablet cannot be solved on their own, and if after all the manipulations done the access point remains inactive, use the services of a specialist. The same is possible.

How to connect a 3G modem to a tablet video

Some tablets don't support SIM cards, and access to the Wi-Fi network is not available everywhere. In this case, a modem with 3G or 4G technology will help you access the Internet. Connecting a modem to your tablet is not difficult.

Checking the tablet

The USB modem connects to almost any device, including an Android tablet. For this will be neededOTG cable, which is sometimes included with the tablet. By connecting the equipment to the gadget, we determine their compatibility:

If the tablet is intended for mobile communications from one of the providers, then the connection will occur automatically. If this does not happen, then enter the operator data.

For Beeline:

  • access point: internet.beeline.ru;
  • username: beeline;
  • password: beeline;
  • MCC: 250.

For Megafon:

  • access point: internet;
  • name: gdata;
  • password: gdatd;
  • MCC: 250;
  • MNC: 99.

For MTS:

  • access point: internet.mts.ru;
  • username: mts;
  • password: mts;
  • MCC: 250;
  • MNC: 99.

For TELE2 Username and password are not needed, access point (APN) is internet.tele2.ru.

Connecting to a tablet

The equipment is mainly intended for computers (PCs), so we will use a PC to configure it. For the device to work correctly, it is required driver installation:

If you don’t have a computer, you can access the virtual network without it. For this you will need netWi-Fi. You can download the application for Android - “PPP WidGet”. The utility itself downloads drivers and software.

In the device settings, turn on the mobile network and connect the equipment OTG cable. Then set the APN value, enter all the provider data and reboot the gadget.

Wireless modems

It is now possible to purchase a 3G or 4G modem that supportsWi-Fi. Then you will not need additional cables and wires. When you insert the SIM card into the device, it will automatically carry out all the settings. You can use it anywhere.

To access the global network, you need turn onWi-Fi and select a connection. Then enter the password, which can be found on the device or in its instructions.

If the modem is detected as a flash drive

Such devices have built-in Zero CD technology, which automatically launches all settings when connected to a PC. In this case, downloading additional utilities is not necessary. But because of this, when connected to a gadget, the equipment may be designated as removable flash drive, i.e. in this case, the tablet simply does not see the modem.

To configure, you need to install the 3G Modem Mode Switcher program on your PC. Connect the device to the computer and run the utility, which will detect the device. Press the button " Modem only».

You can also change the operating mode of the equipment using HyperTerminal:

After changing the settings, the modem will not work on the PC. To return original parameters you need to repeat the entire algorithm of actions described above, only at the end enter “ AT^U2DIAG=255».

Possible problems and their solutions

Sometimes when connecting a USB modem to a tablet, some problems arise. If the equipment does not even light up when connected, then the device not intended for USB-host mode. All that remains is to replace the tablet with a newer model.

If the tablet screen starts flashing or turns off completely, then the equipment consumes more energy than the device is capable of delivering. Then you need to connect the tablet to a charger or buy anotherOTG cable with a connector for additional power.

Many budget tablet computer models are not equipped with built-in SIM card readers. However, this does not mean that the owner of such a gadget will have to give up the opportunity to use 3G mobile Internet. A tablet, just like a desktop computer, can easily connect to the Internet using an external 3G modem, which are sold in abundance in cellular phone stores. There is no need to look for a special modem for an Android tablet in stores - regular 3G modems, the same as for Windows, are suitable for them.

What is a 3G modem?

A 3G modem is a receiving and transmitting device designed for high-speed information exchange via radio communication channels owned by mobile operators. 3G networks, otherwise called third generation networks, support signal reception/transmission speeds of up to several megabits per second and are available wherever there is mobile communication. You can use 3G Internet only on devices that support SIM cards. Therefore, if the tablet is not equipped with a SIM card reader, you can connect a USB modem to it.

How to connect a 3G modem to a tablet and set up the Internet?

To directly connect the modem to the tablet, you only need a data cable with a USB - miniUSB interface. But the process of recognizing a 3G modem by the Android system has its own characteristics. The fact is that this system recognizes the modem as two devices - both as the modem itself and as a flash drive (or CD), and therefore cannot work with it. To solve the problem, you will first have to switch your 3G modem to modem only mode.

To do this you need to do the following:

The Android system cannot work with “composite” devices. Therefore, to use a 3G modem, you need to select one option - switch it to “modem only” mode.

This is done using the Windows Hyper Terminal utility. To connect a Chinese Android tablet to the Internet you need:

Computer running Windows-7, Vista, XP (x86).
3G Modem from ZTE
Tablet PC
Hyper Terminal Program

The Hyper Terminal program is located in Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications > Hyper Terminal - in Windows XP, and for Windows 7 you need to download it from here

Instructions:

First of all, you need to disable PIN code checking on the modem and switch it to “modem only” mode

1. Connect the modem to your Windows PC and make sure it works

4. In the “Connection Description” window, write a name (for example, Huawei) and press ENTER. After a while, the “Connection” window will appear. In its last column “Connect via” select “HUAWEI Mobile Connect - 3G Modem”, then click OK.
The next window after this with phone numbers and other parameters just needs to be closed by clicking the “Cancel” button

5. On the program panel, click the last button “Properties” > In the “Properties: Modem” window that opens, go to the “Options” tab > Click the “ASCII Options” button > Check the second box from the top “Display entered characters on screen” > Click OK . The top window will close > Click OK. The last window will close, then the cursor will blink in the main program window.

6. Turn on CAPS LOCK (capital letters) on the keyboard and type the AT command > Press ENTER. The answer will appear: OK. Indicates that connection with the modem has been established. Next Enter one of the following commands:

AT^U2DIAG=0 (device in modem only mode)
AT^U2DIAG=1 (device in modem + CD-ROM mode)
AT^U2DIAG=255 (device in modem + CD-ROM + Card Reader mode)
AT^U2DIAG=256 (device in modem + Card Reader mode).

To operate the modem in a Chinese tablet, you need to use the command AT^U2DIAG=0, switching the device to “modem only” mode. Having entered the command, press ENTER, and in response we see OK.

Close the Hyper Terminal window by answering “YES” to the offer to interrupt the communication session and refusing to save the connection.

7. Make sure CD-ROM emulation is disabled. To do this, disconnect the modem from the USB port and reconnect it to the same port. No “new” CD-ROM should appear in “My Computer” - only the ones that actually exist.

If it becomes necessary to return the modem to its original state, you must repeat the entire procedure, but with the command AT^U2DIAG=255 (device in modem + CD-ROM + Card Reader mode).

If the modem belongs to one of the brands - ZTE or Huawei (and this is the vast majority of USB modems), you can use a program from ZyXel, which performs all the above steps in one click.

8. Launch Android on your tablet, go to “Settings” > “Wireless Networks” > “Access Points (APN)” and enter the settings of your mobile operator.

9) Restart Android.

10) After restarting Android, simply plug the modified modem into the USB port.
After 7-10 seconds, 3G will appear next to the battery icon

MTS-Connect settings:

Name: internet.mts.ru
dial number: *99#
Username: mts
Password: mts
Click “use default value”

Connecting the tablet to the Internet via a 3G/Wi-Fi router

If using a 3G modem seems too complicated or inconvenient, for example, because of the cable, there is another way to connect your gadget to the Internet via 3G. This method is even simpler, since it does not require special programs and eliminates device incompatibility problems in advance. Mobile Internet for an Android tablet can be configured using a 3G/Wi-Fi router. This device, about the size of a cell phone, can be carried with you at all times and used anywhere there is a mobile connection.

To set up a 3G/Wi-Fi router, you don’t need complex instructions - you just need to have an idea of how to connect a mobile gadget to a wireless Wi-Fi network. All that is required from the owner is to install the SIM card in the router and turn it on. After that, it automatically finds the network and begins to work as a Wi-Fi access point, to which you can connect up to five devices, including a tablet.

The advantage of using a router is that it is easier to set up 3G on an Android tablet. Or rather, you won’t have to manually configure the 3G connection itself. Simply, after turning on the 3G/Wi-Fi router, your gadget begins to automatically receive the Internet via wireless Wi-Fi connection.
